The Small Space 2 Small History

3 years ago we were all set to ocupy an empty lock up and convert it into a gallery/studio space. The space was to be called small space.  It was an empty shop deal, fill the space with something interesting until a better deal comes along for the landlord. As a higher paying customer came up it fell through at the last moment. Meetings with public galleries brought back the fears that our work was too cutting edge for their audience, private galleries were too financially cautious to take the risk.  Ventures in empty shops, whilst providing a good chance to hang work and try things out had to build an audience in a very short time. Hiring spaces was prohibitively expensive. Proposals went in to galleries and institutions who have clauses in their briefs which say they wont reply or give feedback.

The other day  I was in a charity shop and saw a new opportunity. The 1960's dollhouse by the side of the desk. Could, I wondered, we convert the house into a gallery, run it like a full scale gallery and show it around the country? Could it not only provide a scaled down space for full scale exhibitions but also explore the issues encountered by artists in the art world today?

We don't yet know the answers to the above questions but this blog will note the story of small space 2. Please become a follower if you want updates to your inbox on our progress.
